Embryos and tumours use the same signalling pathways to direct the formation of blood vessels. Discovery of a new role for the Notch pathway in that process presents a fresh option for cancer treatment. Angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels from existing ones, is a highly active process in embryos. In adults, blood vessels in most organs are quiescent - except, notably, during the growth of solid tumours, when embryonic signalling pathways direct new blood vessels to grow around and into the tumour.
