In 1997, Dolly the sheep unleashed bioethical responses of every conceivable flavour, from the ruminatively utilitarian to the emotionally outraged. Leon Kass, a bioethicist at the University of Chicago, Illinois, who chaired President Bush's Council on Bioethics from 2002 to 2005, combined scholarly and visceral responses in a much cited essay entitled 'The Wisdom of Repugnance'. He did not go quite so far as to say that the revulsion reportedly evoked by the prospect of human cloning was. in itself an argument against such endeavours.
