Scientists should embrace, not fear, television news. If the press is vital for fostering debate in a healthy democracy, then science is in trouble - because the press provides little coverage of science for the general public. I was a scientist and part-time science illustrator before moving into the media full-time in 1998. As a practising scientist, I admit I thought very little about reaching out to the public. According to a poll of members of the US scientific society, Sigma Xi, I was in good company. In this poll, commissioned by ResearchlAmerica, 74% said they did not have time for public outreach, and 41% believed their involvement makes no difference. Half of the respondents did not know how to become involved. But after spending two years in Washington DC as a science policy fellow for the American Association for the Advancement of Science, I realized how important it is for scientists - or anyone with a strong point of view - to communicate directly and effectively with the public.
