Kevin Short could have stayed a mathe-matician. Studying nonlinear dynamics I X at the Univer sity of New Hampshir e in Durham had its pleasures, but also its limitations. As a young man working at IBM, he'd observed how the older managers came alivewhen they talked about building the first satellites in the 1960s. "They just glowed," he recalls. Short wanted to see his own ideas for applying chaos mathematics to telecommunications become reality. But he knew that a uni-versity mathematics department was not the place to do it.
