Efficient reactions in aqueous organic chemistry do not require soluble reactants, as had been thought. A newly developed 'on-water' protocol is characterized by short reaction times, and the products are easy to isolate. Water is unique. The chemistry of living organisms depends on its combination of unusual properties, and it is difficult to imagine life in the absence of the aqueous medium. For synthetic organic chemistry, however, it is less important, because water is traditionally not a popular choice of solvent.
