A research career was just a dream for Mateusz Kolanczyk and Tomasz Zemojtel when the two kindergarten friends found themselves together at high school, and later university, in Gdansk, Poland, in the 1990s. Kolanczyk's interest in biology had been sparked by a popular article he once read about the Human Genome Project, but he also remembers how his friend had to help him out in chemistry, where he had miserable marks. Miracles do happen. After many twists and turns, the two met again last year at the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Molecular Genetics in Berlin, one of Europe's leading research institutes in the field. Now postdocs - in molecular biology and bioinformatics, respectively - they soon discovered a common interest in a mitochondrial gene relevant for bone biology. Thus, some 15 years after they first started to enthuse about the wonders of life, they are set to embark on a research project of their own.
