Physics is much like gardening. Both create small worlds that model some of the most important and appealing parts of reality ― physicists on paper using mathematical patterns and judicious approximation, gardeners by reconnecting the real. Both look for order amid complexity. Both make the global local; one uses reductionism, the other, like all art, does not. The two rarely meet, but when they do, it is either to help us escape from a maze or to lead us into the temptations of fantasy. Jorge Luis Borges' Garden of the Forking Paths, for instance, tells us about a multiverse of bifurcating realities where all possibilities are realized. Another example has been created by the architect Charles Jencks. Over the past eight years, Jencks has created a12-hectare Garden of Cosmic Speculation at Portrack in Scotland, UK. It is not yet open to the public, other than by special arrangement, so most peoplewill haveto limit their experience of this monumental creation to Jencks' sumptuously llustrated book The Garden of Cosmic Specu-ation (Frances Lincoln, 2003), in which he describes how the garden was conceived, designed and made, in memory of his late wife, Maggie Keswick, who played a key role in its early design and landscaping.
