In December 2003, a company called OncoTherapy Science hit the Tokyo Stock Exchange at full tilt. The company, a spin-off from the University of Tokyo that provides potential targets for cancer therapy based on genetic analyses of patients, is now valued at about ￥110 billion (US$1 billion). Established only three years ago, the company is already making a profit. Its performance would have been impressive for a start-up anywhere in the world. In Japan, hampered by regulations and short on know-how for transferring knowledge from the university to industry, it was an extraordinary achievement. So much so, say OncoTherapy executives, that it has become the target of envy. Yusuke Nakamura of the University of Tokyo, whose extensive research into the genetic profiles of cancer patients laid the foundations for the company, refuses to talk to journalists lest his mission in creating the company be misunderstood.
