Methyl bromide (CH_3Br) and methyl chloride (CH_3Cl) both originate in large part from natural sources. These gases can reach the stratosphere where their halogen atoms, released through photolysis, catalytically destroy ozone. Three papers in this issue (pages 292-301) may help to close large gaps in the calculated budgets of methyl halides in the atmosphere. They also open up possibilities for improving our understanding of the fluxes of other naturally produced, halogenated gases.
