Proteins that evolve with unusual speed pique our interest because the mere rapidity of their change may be a clue to their function and adaptive significance. Proteins involved in sexual reproduction are particularly exciting because of their potential function in determining the success of sperm and eggs. Indeed, such 'sex-related' proteins do, generally, show accelerated evolution. A report by Wyckoff et al.3 on page 304 of this issue now highlights the accelerated evolution of the genes encoding a group of proteins called the protamines, which are associated with male reproduction. The authors suggest that this rapid evolution is driven by sexual selection, and the story involves some interesting twists.
