An extended version of this guide and Nature's publication policy is available at www.nature.comature/submit/gta, in both PDF and html formats. Nature is a weekly international journal covering all the sciences. Its readership is interdisciplinary, so manuscripts should be written clearly and simply, paying particular attention to the fact that English is not the first language of many readers. Competition for Natures limited space is severe, so brevity is essential. Length limits are specified in terms of the number of pages in Nature. An uninterrupted page of text contains about 1,300 words, so a typical Letter to Nature, occupying 2 1/2 pages, contains about 1,500 words of text and four small display items (figures and/or tables) with brief legends. Contributions containing more than four display items must have shorter text to compensate. (See www.nature.com for details of page calculations.) Authors of contributions containing multipart figures are advised to reduce the figures to final reproduction size on one copy of their submitted manuscripts. Length limits can be varied at the editor's discretion.
