Will biomedicine outgrow support?

摘要

Throughout the developed countries, bio-medical science has grown spectacularly in the past 50 years. The benefits to society, and the fascination of understanding how life works, have attracted growing numbers of young scientists and medical graduates to biological research. Support by governments and charities has also grown, but nevertheless, scientists in both Europe and the United States suffer from a funding crisis that has made it increasingly hard to obtain support. For this reason, and out of curiosity, I have estimated the rise in the numbers of scientists engaged in the field since the Second World War, and compared this rise with the rise in the amounts of government money spent on it in the United States and in two representative European countries: Britain and Germany. Below I describe my unexpected findings and discuss their implications for the future development of the biomedical sciences and of their industrial applications in the United States and Europe.
