Species are becoming extinct at one of the highest rates in the Earth's history. So a pressing task in conservation biology is to document the effects of species losses on ecosystems. Such knowledge is necessary to draw public attention to the problem, which in turn is a prerequisite for political action. Unfortunately, in most cases it is almost impossible to determine rigorously the ecological consequences of the loss of a species. On page 563 of this issue, Crooks and Soule provide a rare example. It shows how the loss of one 'top predator' — the coyote (Fig. 1) — leads to a higher extinction rate of scrub-breeding birds, through an ecological release of smaller predators.
