[PARIS] One of France's leading human geneticists has resigned as chairman of the committee that advises the French government on genetically modified organisms (GMOs), claiming that a recent decision by the French government to ban the cultivation ofa transgenic maize has made his job impossible. Axel Kahn, director of the INSERM Laboratory of Research on Genetics and Molecular Pathology at the Cochin Institute of Molecular Genetics in Paris, and chairman of the Biomolecular Engineering Commission, claims that the decision is inconsistent with an earlier decision by the government to seek permission for the import of the maize from the United States and the sale of the resulting crops.
