摘要

Should archaeological remains be returned to the cultures from which they were removed? We should consider the needs of researchers and wider society as well as acknowledging the sensibilities of indigenous communities. Recent, widely publicized arguments about the repatriation of human skeletal remains from museum and other collections highlight the opposing forces of Western scientific values and a global cultur al renaissance among indigenous populations. Some see these two perspectives as implacable opponents, and believe that the destruction of ancient evidence of indigenous communities is no better than European cultural imperialism. On the other hand, physical archaeology is increasingly seen as a discipline under threat, with scientific freedom compromised by repair iation.
