Talk of restrletions on human cloning has failed to take account of the possible medical benefits and to consider public attitudes in depth. Scientists on both sides of the Atlantic last week warned political leaders against excessive haste in legislating on human cloning, saying that overrestrictive measures could impede both important research and progress in animal biotechnology and medicine. The warning follows the wave of concern expressed by political and religious leaders worldwide about the first successful cloning from an adult cell of a mammal. The done, Dolly the lamb, was produced by Ian Wilmut and colleagues at the Roslin Institute and PPL Therapeutics near Edinburgh (see Nature 385,810; 1997).
