摘要

Despite continued warnings by scientists of the disastrous impact of fishing practices, stocks continue to disappear. While some say that scientists should shout more loudly, others suggest it is time for them to change their tactics. World fish stocks are in crisis. Almost two-thirds of marine stocks in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans are being fully exploited or have already been overfished, even if some are recovering slowly. Future projections predict a steadily widening gap between the world's demand for fish and the ability of the oceans to meet it. Many scientists claim that the situation is the inevitable result of the failure of governments to heed their warnings of the danger s of overfishing; and where they have listened to this message, failing to adopt and forcefully police policies designed to prevent this. This is particularly so in the developed world, where the wishes of powerful fishing industry lobbies to retain higher catch quotas can frequently outweigh the advice of scientists who suggest a reduction in order for fish to be'sustainably harvested.
