摘要

[WASHING TON] US scientists and bioethicists reacted with alarm last week to moves by two congressmen to ban human cloning, calling their bills so poorly drafted as to threaten the beneficial research that might otherwise result from the cloning of asheep by scientists in Scotland. Brigid Hogan, for example, a professor of cell biology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, and co-chair of a panel that recommended in 1994 that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) be permitted to fund some human embryo research, expressed a widely held view that politicians were "shooting from the hip" John Fletcher, a professor of biomedical ethics at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, described the congressional proposals as "profoundly misguided and inappropriate", coming as they do before extensive, reasoned debate has takep place.
