摘要

When it was first published in 1968, everyone in the business seized on The Double Helix with eager anticipation: we wanted not so much to have our minds improved by the science as to be entertained by some of Jim Watson's grosser anecdotes. Nor were we disappointed, and the reviews by Watson's friends and former friends propelled his book into The New York Times' best-sellers list. Watson was probably surprised by the tumult, for he had not, I believe, envisaged a succes de scandale; he meant the book, rather, to stand as a serious contribution to history by a protagonist in one of the great intellectual adventures of the century. Of course, as Oscar Wilde observed, autobiography offers a unique opportunity to tell the truth about other people, and it is no secret that Watson's fellow Nobel laureates, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins, made strenuous efforts to prevent publication of what they saw as a parody of the events. But Crick has since told his own version of the story, as also nowhave others — many of them to Horace Judson — so one can take one's choice.
