Magnetic fields appear to be ubiquitous in the interstellar gas in disk galaxies. These fields have important effects on the dynamics and energy balance of the gas, as well as on star formation, and theory predicts that their morphology should reflect the structure of the ambient medium. However, the magnetic spiral arms discovered in the galaxy NGC6946 by Beck and Hoernes, reported on page 47 of this issue, do not coincide with any visible galactic feature.
