摘要

Despite wide interest in human genome patents, there has been little information about exactly who owns what. Europe would do well to ponder over the stake already held by Japan and the United States. THE patenting of human DNA sequences is the most controversial aspect of the Human Genome Project (HGP). Academic scientists strive to increase knowledge and to publish their findings. Companies, on the other hand, regard the exclusivity gained through patenting as essential to successful commercial exploitation of the HGP for new therapeutic and diagnostic tools. Public debate over the ethics of patenting DNA has become more and more intense over the past three years as the HGP has gathered pace.
