IT is easy to be both enchanted, and bewildered, by the diversity of life on Earth. An obvious reaction is to concentrate upon the particular, as natural historians have done for generations. But doing good natural history is only one component of doing good science. Ecologists need to discover the patterns and rules that underpin the seemingly endless lists of species. Insects at one and the same time present a particular challenge and advantage — they are the most speciose class of organisms on Earth, dominating terrestrial ecosystems; but it is relatively straightforward, albeit labour intensive, to sample entire assemblages.
