As part of an intensive search for natural suppressors of HIV replication produced by T lymphocytes, Baier et al. reported a novel antiviral activity of inter-leukin-16 (IL-16), a CD8~+ T-cell-derived cytokine. This molecule was first identified as a lymphocyte chemoattractant factor (LCF) because of its ability to promote the migration of CD4~+ T cells. More recent studies indicate that this factor is released from CD8~+ T cells after stimulation by antigens, histamine or mitogens; however, the deduced protein sequence of human LCF lacks a recognizable signal peptide to facilitate secretion.
