No one who has seen (or survived) an anaphylactic reaction is likely ever to forget it. The cost of this exquisitely specific but catastrophic immune response, which can be triggered in sensitized individuals by such otherwise minor provocations as a bee sting or dose of penicillin, so grotesquely outweighs any apparent benefit that immunologists have long sought counterbalancing adaptive functions for one of the main culprits, the mast cell. On pages 75 and 77 of this issue, Echtenacher et al. and Malaviya et al. now report that the cell which is potentially deadly in anaphylaxis can also orchestrate life-saving host responses to bacterial infection.
