LATE last year English Heritage published, in a single volume, full reports on the twentieth-century excavations at and around Stonehenge. This has been long awaited by archaeologists. Until the book's appearance, details of the two major campaigns ofexcavation at the monument — those of Lt-Col William Hawley in the 1920s, and the work of Richard Atkinson, Stuart Piggott and John F. S. Stone in the 1950s and early 1960s — had remained inaccessible. Their availability removes a considerable hindrance to any attempt to understand and interpret the sequence of events at Stonehenge in the wider context of Wessex, an area covering parts of Wiltshire, Dorset, Hampshire and Berkshire, in the Middle-Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age (roughly 3000-1500BC).
