THE nature and the very existence of a coherent global ocean-circulation pattern has been in debate for the past 10 years. Particularly contentious is the relative importance of the 'warm route' and the 'cold route' — the possible paths of flow intothe Atlantic Ocean needed to balance the export of North Atlantic Deep Water (see figure). On page 436 of this issue, Macdonald and Wunsch present a coherent, global look at ocean circulation and heat flux that may answer that question. They suggest that instead of just one, there are two global-scale ocean-circulation cells, which behave nearly independently of each other.
