PRESYNAPTIC terminals have resisted biophysical analysis for decades. We have known since the classical experiments by Katz and associates' that calcium ions are the immediate trigger for release of neurotransmitters. But, because of the inaccessibility of the tiny structures involved, details of the kinetics and magnitude of this signal have remained a mystery.
