WITH their permeable skins, shell-less eggs and use of land as well as freshwater habitats, amphibians are sensitive indicators of environmental quality. Hence the concern aroused by worldwide reports of declines in amphibian populations, possibly stemming from the combined effects of many causes. Those causes are very difficult to tease apart, but a new paper by Gamradt and Kats1 elegantly applies all four methodologies of experimental ecology to establish the nature of the threat posed to one particular amphibian. It turns out that the story is an old one in ecology -- preda-tion by introduced species. But the twist in this case is that official policy continues unwittingly to assist the process of decline.
