A brief visit to Australia confirms the impression that there is much excellent Australian science; the surprise is that the research community has embraced the goal of wealth creation with enthusiasm and some success. AUSTRALIA is comparable with theNetherlands both in population and gross national product (GNP), but with three striking differences. First, Australia is a continent in its own right and not a narrow strip of land half reclaimed from the sea. Second, Australia is far from most other places and therefore geographically prone to the feeling of neglect engendered by isolation. Third, unlike the Netherlands, Australia is now growing quickly in size, as much from immigration from the north as from indigenous growth, and becoming markedlymore cosmopolitan in the process. To most outsiders, it is also important that the Sun is in the north at midday.
