摘要

Despite crises in image and funding, Italian biomedical research has reached a turning point. A brighter future is in prospect if the universities successfully reorganize themselves and new competitive institutes are established. THE Italian university system has suddenly come into the limelight. Over the past few weeks, national newspapers have devoted whole pages to exposing the latest of Italy's corruption scandals. Essentially, two aspects are now under scrutiny: the ethical status of professorsappointed because of their personal connections rather than scientific merits; and the painful status of students, whose misfortune is to be taught by inappropriately qualified and often absent professors. But in addition to its immediate effect on students, this complex situation threatens the future of the country as a whole, because university scholars play an essential part in the development of science and technology as well as in teaching. In this respect, the state of biomedical'research is now particularly vulne table.
