On the taxonomic hierarchy that runs from species to kingdom, phylum ranks one level from the top. There are only 35 or so animal phyla, to which the Cycliophora must now be added. MILLIONS of species remain undescribed, and given the present rates ofhabitat destruction a good number will probably say farewell to the Earth under a bulldozer or pile of sludge. Nevertheless, the general rule is that wherever the zoologist looks, from the abyssal depths of an oceanic trench to the canopy of a tropicalrainforest, the species may well be new to science, but the major groups to which they belong will almost certainly be well known. This is particularly true of the 35 or so basic body plans (or phyla) of animals. With only a few months' training a zoologist staring into a bucketful of deep-sea worms should have few difficulties: "That's a nema-tode; careful with that annelid, it bites; I never knew sipunculans were so slimy...". To report, as Punch and Kristensen do on page 711 of this issue, what appears to be a new phylum of rnetazoans has to be the zoological highlight of the decade.
