In 2009, the transdisciplinary network of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences organised a conference dealing with integration. Integration is what a scientist is confronted with when incorporating other lay or scientific knowledge to one's own practice. Participants made a parallel between disciplinary differentiation and boundary-work between laypeople and scientists. Such separations are entrenched in identities and political commitments. Boundaries are maintained through the use of different languages. Feminist studies were given wide attention since they opened avenues to question the values enshrined in scientific discourses. Some participants considered integration was a critical test for disciplinary scientists as individuals. Because it raised questions on premises and practices, integration was an existential experience. Not all scientists engaged in transdisciplinarity are ready to face such a challenge. Some participants preferred promoting tools in order to facilitate effective knowledge integration without challenging epis-temological and identity foundations. Discussions between the existentialist and the pragmatic revolved around the lack of problematization of integration as a powerful framing imposed by the project logic.%La conférence du réseau transdisciplinaire des Académies suisses des sciences organisée en 2009 avait pour thème l'intégration.
