In 1629 the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie or VOC) ship Batavia struck a reef off Australia and sank. In 1963 a dive confirmed that a wreck found off Australia was Batavia. The wreck was excavated in the 1970s. Dutch East India Company Shipbuilding: The Archaeological Study of Batavia and Other Seventeenth Century VOC Ships, by Wendy van Duien-voorde, provides one of the fruits of the excavation and its analysis. Van Duienvoorde uses those results to show how seventeenth century Dutch ships were built.
