As a reader of this journal, you would most likely agree that the Global Positioning System (GPS) has been a revolution for the navigation community and our society. The ability to accurately and robustly answer the simple question of "Where am I?" using a relatively low-cost receiver has changed the way we interact with the world. From finding the nearest Starbucks to providing terminal approach guidance for aircraft, GPS has redefined the notion of accurate navigation. As innovative uses for this newfound accuracy are created every day, we become dependent on the availability of the system. In a sense, the accuracy provided by GPS is addictive. The effort to expand the reach of precision navigation capabilities into dense urban environments, indoors, underground, and even in deep space is currently a topic of great interest and is being pursued by a number of civilian and government organizations. The motivation for this special issue is to present a sampling of the techniques currently undergoing research to navigate without GPS or other Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS).
