Cross Correlation Impacts and Observations in GNSS Receivers

Detection of weak signals in Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) is critical in many applications. In the case of the Global Positioning System (GPS), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) modulation is used. In this system cross correlation, due to the limited dynamic range of the CIA code signal, has been shown to be problematic in dealing with weak signal acquisition. However, GPS is not alone in dealing with cross correlation aspects. Surprisingly, cross correlation also impacts the Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) GNSS of Russia known as GLONASS. A general closed formula is derived to represent this interference which is applicable for all GNSS. This formula is then leveraged for various GNSS and their operation with some timely examples.
