In the 1970s, the department of the NAVY pioneered the exploitation of a renewable energy resource that was available on one of its bases in the western U.S. Personnel at Naval Air Weapons Station (NAWS) China Lake came up with the idea of tapping into the base's abundant underground geothermal resources and using the energy to produce electricity. NAVFAC brought this idea to fruition. Today, four geothermal power plants boasting nine 30-mwh turbine-generator sets are located within the main production area of China Lake's Coso Geothermal Field. Since the plant went online in 1987, the resulting 180-megawatt (mwh) geothermal power plant at China Lake has provided cheaper electricity to the Navy and has supplied a source of valuable funding for the Navy Energy Program—the plant has put more than 26,000 gigawatt-hours (gwh) of electricity into the western power grid.
