Beroul''s telling of the story of Tristran and Yseut is in a most regrettable state, the single manuscript in which it is preserved lacking both beginning and ending and its graphies offering many challenges. It is an odd coincidence that the long remaining fragment is framed by scenes that, themselves incomplete, are strikingly alike in situation and in the use of deceptive speech. Two dangerous trysts are spied upon by a third and hostile party, whose presence is detected by the lovers who act in consort to outwit him. The first rendez-vous, with pine-tree and fountain, is very well-known and often depicted in art; the second has received little commentary and to my knowledge no illustration. This essay concentrates on this final scene and on certain technical terms that contribute to an understanding of the action.
