For Drupal 7 Mark Boulton and Leisa Reichelt were asked to take a look at the user experience of Drupal, because it was a mess. This spawned the D7UX project . Although not all the changes hoped for were made, many improvements have found their way into Drupal 7. The biggest change was the admin theme called Seven. Drupal has never had an admin theme in core before, therefore the frontend and the backend always looked the same. Now the user knows where they are and what they are doing within the site admin.
