摘要

Google's new Web-based email service, dubbed Gmail, has been hailed in some naieve quarters as the world's first free lunch. Wiser heads think otherwise but cannot quite agree on the hidden costs of this apparently give-away service. The main contenders are email eavesdropping by either commercial or government agencies, intrusion of advertising, and total dependence on a single external service provider. Such concerns are not peculiar to Gmail, but are relevant in the context of Google's obvious ambitions to become for email what it already is for searching, the gold standard. Google's timing is largely to convince investors that the massive price to earnings ratio of its share offering, typical of the bad old dotcom boom days, is worth paying. To do this Google cannot sit on its laurels after winning the search engine wars - it must capitalise on this advantage firstly to make web mail a realistic alternative to client based systems such as Microsoft's Outlook Express. It must then take over from its two main Web rivals, Yahoo and again Microsoft with HotMail.
