摘要

Loaded with data-generating sensors and clever network software, cars will presumably be able to recognize (and avoid) one another. Roads will predict traffic congestion and adjust traffic lights accordingly. Bridges will detect their own weaknesses. Reservoirs and levees will proclaim their leaks. Station platforms and bus stops will anticipate the arrival of the next train and bus. Patient health, particularly for the disabled, will be under full-time automated monitoring. Thermostats, appliances, and office lighting will sense and adjust to the instantaneous cost of power, as well as to the sunlight streaming through the window-turning themselves off during peak load times when electricity is more expensive or simply not needed.
