Personalized medicine, which depends on evaluating the human genome, is widening our knowledge of how the body fends off diseases and neutralizes toxins. Increasingly, pioneering genomic researchers and medical doctors are finding that we all carry the essence of disorders that may or may not manifest in our lifetimes. Studies of why these predispositions manifest in some people but not in others could lead us to unravel cures and prevent disease in the years to come. Such knowledge is changing the focus of medicine, down to the way doctors analyze and treat human illness.rnWhen we visit a doctor's office, we often expect to leave with a prescription. One aspect of personalized medicine concentrates on tailoring prescription drugs to accommodate genomic factors, or pharmacogenomics.
