Those with an eye on pink slips and 401K levels these past few months have had little to cheer about. As the U.S. stock market shakes the financial globe, vendors in the tech sector have dropped jobs like autumn leaves with companies like AT&T cutting jobs tied to aging technology. The numerals on the IT job-loss Scoreboard change so fast I finally decided I couldn't cite reliable figures that won't be out of date by the time this story goes live. And if the morning roll call of com- panies shedding tens or hundreds of thousands of jobs isn't enough to dent your spirit, a story in the Christian Science Monitor recently pointed out that the last two recessions saw "jobless recoveries." For those of us who wandered, stunned, through the ever-shrinking IT job fairs of the 2000-2002 recession, this kind of news is unnerving.
