Almost a decade ago I began my tenure as NetNews columnist by looking with great enthusiasm at the various broadband technologies under development. I waxed lyrical about DSL and cable, rhapsodized about satellites, and sang paeans of praise to broadband via power lines.rnYet here I am, almost a decade later, still using a dial-up connection from my home in rural upstate New York.rnVerizon (my telco) promised to bring DSL service to 98 percent of its customers. Instead of raising the bridge the company is lowering the river by selling off rural, local exchange carrier businesses to other providers, getting rid of customers it would not be profitable to connect.
