Swiss television technology group Kudelski this week insisted that it had no plans to absorb OpenTV despite having increased its stake in the interactive-television middleware company. Kudelski, whose core business is the Nagravision conditional-access product, recently increased its economic interest in the Nasdaq-listed Open TV from 26.7 per cent to 26.94 per cent and its voting interest from 74.7 per cent to 75.31 per cent. A year ago Kudelski became the biggest shareholder after buying out John Malone's Liberty Media for around US$ 132 million (￡65 million) (NMM October 27, 2006). The company said that it had upped its stake because it "believes in the future of the company", that it had "no plans to integrate" Open TV into the Kudelski group and that the middleware operation would "remain an independently operating company at arm's length". Kudelski added: "Open TV currently also co-operates with some competitors of other Kudelski Group companies, which would not be possible any more if we should go for a stronger integration. We don't speak about integration, but rather about seizing joint opportunities." Open TV insisted that independence was vital to its continuing recovery and claimed that it remained the major force in the European pay-television middleware market, despite increased financial losses and the resignation of president and chief executive Alan Guggenheim at the end of August.
