France's communications ministry and its television regulator this week proposed the creation of a subsidy fund of up to ?32 million (£21 million) to provide digital-terrestrial reception equipment to homes that face the early switch-off of analogue television signals. A report to the government from the communications ministry's media division (DDM) and the Conseil Superieur de l'Audiovisuel (CSA) suggested the subsidy fund as part of a package of measures to deliver the government's objective of an accelerated rollout of digital-terrestrial television. In October, prime minister Dominique de Villepin announced new targets that would make digital-terrestrial television available to 70 per cent of the French population by the end of next year and to 85 per cent by March 2007, two years after the launch of the platform.
