This essay reviews sociologist Shyon Baumann's Hollywood Highbrow: From Entertainment to Art (Princeton University Press, 2007). While Baumann's book might, at first, be intuitively situated as a sociological study, it is also fundamentally a work of film studies, using 1960s Hollywood cinema as a case study to raise more general questions about film and its relationship to art, questions which have long been explored by film historians and theorists.
