It sounds brutal, but as a last resort people with severe epilepsy may have surgery to remove the brain region where their seizures start. This is identified using EEG scans taken during a seizure. Not only is this unpleasant, but the surgery fails to stop fits in 30 per cent of cases. Frances Hutchings at Newcastle University, UK, used fMRI scans and diffusion tensor imaging to get a more detailed, personalised prediction of the area for removal in 22 people - without waiting for them to have a seizure.
