2015 was the year of the neural network - algorithms that mimic how the human brain works, In February, Google announced that its DeepMind Al could play video games just by watching them. The software wasn't told the rules of the game - instead it used a neural network to examine the state of the game and figure out which actions produce the highest total score. Forget Bitcoin, the blockchain is where its at. The technology behind the cryptocurrency began to show promise that it could decentralise many aspects of society beyond money: identity, ownership, reputation and even the rule of law. One of the early front runners was the platform Ethereum, which launched in August and lets developers build distributed apps on its blockchain.
