Deep sea sharks are pigging out on the beef, lamb, fruit and veg we throw away. They gobble this down alongside plastic rubbish and dead marine animals that sink to their dark habitats at depths exceeding 2000 metres. This is according to Joan Cartes of the Institute of Marine Sciences in Barcelona and his team who caught 445 fish living in or around the Valencia trench in the western Mediterranean Sea - and analysed their stomach contents (Deep Sea Research Ⅰ, doi.org/9ww).
