Buckle up. Elon Musk has already sculpted out visions for the future of online payments, solar power, electric cars and space launches with his companies PayPal, SolarCity, Tesla and SpaceX. Next year, he will attempt to make his mark on public transport, testing prototypes of a system called the Hyperloop. Musk first mentioned the idea in public in 2012. It features passenger pods that whiz through a series of low-pressure tubes at about 1100 kilometres an hour, riding on a cushion of air rather than wheels and bearings. The 28-person pods are accelerated up to their maximum speed using a series of magnets.
